The Stance

Placement of the feet is important as you want to stand exactly the same distance from the target each time you throw. Some people favour a more upright stance while others like to be in more of a crouch. Use what feels comfortable. If you're throwing a lot of knives in one day you'll soon find out what makes you tired more quickly.

John has changed his style of teaching to include, for beginners, starting at one turn of the knife as opposed to half a turn. John says, "I have done this because some people feel it is a bit too near to start at half a spin as they fear a bounce back. Once I have taught them one spin and they are competent at it then I move them up to half a spin. Starting places for one turn is usually between 10 -11 1/2 ft'. Half spin is usually about 7 - 8 ft." (This is with 12 -14" knives)

The idea is to be comfortable in the way you throw. Most right handed people favour having the left foot forward but this doesn't have to be the case if it feels unnatural to you.

Which ever stance feels comfortable, use it.
